Today we travel via Gordon’s Bay along False Bay on one of the most beautiful coastal roads in South Africa to Hermanus. We drive past Rooi Else, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay.
Shortly before Hermanus we stop for a wine tasting at a beautiful wine estate in the Hemel & Aarde wine region. Once in Hermanus, a stroll along the coast is recommended, where from the cliffs you have a fantastic view of the bay and possibly of whales.
Hermanus is well known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Every year between July and November the animals, up to 16 m long and weighing 60 tonnes, sometimes come as close as 20 m to the shore. But even when it is not whale season, the drive along the coastal road to Hermanus is worth it in itself.
Back to Cape Town we travel through the fruit and wine-growing regions of Elgin and Grabouw. At the highest point of Sir Lowry’s Pass we stop for a fantastic view over the whole of False Bay. From here it is not far to Cape Town and your accommodation.
